Uneventful August

August 2010 was an uneventful month with average temperatures for this time of the year. The mean maximum temperature of 31.2°C was 0.6°C below average, while the mean minimum temperature of 23.9°C was 0.3°C above average. This made the mean monthly temperature of 27.6°C just 0.1°C below average.

The highest maximum temperature of 35.5°C on the 14th was way below the record. In fact, the highest ever August temperature was of 43.0°C in 1999. On the 9th of the month the lowest minimum temperature of 20.5°C was reached. The temperature dropped to a chilly 18.0°C on 23rd August 1997, the coolest August night on record.

August is usually a dry month with just 6.0mm and only one or two days of rain. However, August 2010 was mainly sunny with just a few clouds at times and not a hint of rain!

The most frequent wind direction was from the northwest with an average wind speed at Zebbug Malta of 11.3km/h. The strongest gust of 55.5km/h was recorded on the last day of the month due to the presence of a low pressure system over Italy and the Balkans. The corresponding highest gust on the same day at Mellieha was of 64.3km/h.


 
July slightly cooler than average

July 2010 was slightly cooler than average by with the mean monthly temperature of 27.0°C being 0.2°C below average. July 2010 was the third consecutive month with cooler than average temperatures. In fact, the maximum temperatures of the last 10 days of the month were the coolest ever on record.

The mean maximum temperature of 30.7°C was 0.8°C below average, while the mean minimum temperature of 23.2°C was 0.4°C above average. The highest temperature was of 37.3°C on 15th July, while the highest ever July temperature was 43.1°C in 1988.

As mentioned above, July nights were warmer than average. On the 30th of the month the lowest night-time temperature of 21.3°C was reached. The temperature dropped to a chilly 17.4°C on 1st July 1992, the coolest July night on record.

July is usually a dry month with just an average rainfall of 0.2 mm. However, last month was even drier when absolutely no rainfall was measured.

The westnorthwest was the most frequent wind direction with an average wind speed at Zebbug Malta of 10.8km/h. The strongest gust of 59.2km/h was recorded on the 24th due to the presence of a low pressure system over Italy and the Balkans. The corresponding highest gust on the same day at Mellieha was of 81.4km/h.
